- What a FUNTASTIC Rotary Quiz Night, on 14 July 2023!

A Friday night filled with challenging general questions, local trivia, music questions that turned into sing-alongs, warming fires and deep laughter. The Quiz Master ruled with humour and good timing, whilst table monitors ensured that their tables were well watered, well fed....and weren't googling 🙂 No one went hungry, what with a table full of snacks to start with, and an excellent dinner prepared by Scotty .... and his team.

The deserved winners on the night were the aptly named and appropriately dressed "Realtors Masterminds", led by the dynamic Elsie Oosthuizen of Realtors International.

The team was presented with the Rotary Quiz Night floating trophy and a wonderful winners prize from KWV.

The first in a series of Rotary Quiz Nights, the Friday was a wonderful success, and we thank everyone who took part.

With the tables having sold out within days of launch, the question on everyone's lips at the end of the evening was, " When is the next one?"

Rotary Club Swellendam held their Annual President's induction dinner on Friday night at De Vagabond restaurant. What an auspicious evening! Thirty nine guests snugged up in a wonderfully warm environment and enjoyed the company of their elder Honorary Rotarians and newer members. Whilst the induction is steeped in tradition and formality, many laughs were had, which underlined the New President's theme for 2023/24 of "FUN & FELLOWSHIP".
Nigel Coley, the outgoing president, handed the mantle over to Jacques du Preez after a most inspiring message to the club from District Governor Tracey Wilson - of Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club. Nigel also took the opportunity to welcome Desiree Vorster as the newest member who was inducted during the event.
Jacques rose to the occasion with an articulate message delivered in both Afrikaans and English outlining his objectives for the year as well as embracing several "Fun" challenges posed to him by the members to make his year a memorable and fun one, whilst emphasizing the importance of enjoying our work, fostering strong relationships, and making a lasting impact on our community - The Spirit of Rotary.
The year ahead has some exciting challenges, as per usual Rotary Swellendam will be the principal event managers for the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century Cycle Race in November. The Club has also undertaken to establish a Multi-Million Dollar Early Learning centre in Railton . More news to follow.

- It was a pleasure for President Nigel Cole and Stephen Younge to handover knitting to Homebase Care in Railton.The knitting was done by the ladies at the Avonson ladies club in Railton. The knitted items will be handed out to pregnant mums and mothers of newborn babies at a function in about a month's time. Rotary Swellendam are proud to be associated with local service orientated community projects such as this. Our current president Nigel Cole is also the project leader of this wonderful and enriching project. ❤️

- “Rotarian Stephen Young presented Dottie Jonas from Swellendam Municipality with a bunch of flowers today when he collected the Community Survey conducted by graduates of the NQ Level 5 Business Management Course, represented by Burg in the photo, and overseen by Dottie in her role as the Community Liaison manager. The survey found overwhelming community support for the Rotary Club of Swellendam project to build an Early Childhood Development Centre in the Rondomskrik area of Railton in partnership with Swellendam Municipality and the Overberg Department of Education. The 388 households in Rondomskrik are about to be joined by 900 more families when the current housing development plan is completed in 2023/24. Yet at present there are no creches, pre-schools or facilities for the young children who live there. Swellendam Rotary club is busy raising funds for this project, so if anyone has a spare Rand tucked away looking for a home, please donate it to RotaryKlubSwellendam at FNB, account number 5384 2350 836, Reference ECD project. - Annual District Assembly and Conference - Some members of the Swellendam Rotary Club made their way to Sea point for the Annual District Assembly and Conference on 20 and 21 April 2023. Held at the President hotel, both days were packed with interesting and inspiring speakers and opened by a piper from the South African Defence Force. The Rotary international President, Jennifer Jones (who had visited us in Cape Town on 4 and 5 April) was represented by RI Director Jeremy Hurst from the Cayman islands. The executive mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis gave a very good address and sponsored the cocktail party at the city hall on Friday evening. He was made an Honorary member of Waterfront Rotary Club. Thandeka Tutu from the Tutu Foundation was also there to report progress with the Tutu Desk project which, in partnership with Rotary, is providing desks to schools without furniture all over Africa to enable children to learn to write. The incoming District Governor Ann Wright, from Hermanus Rotary Club, was inducted ready to assume the role on 1 July 2023. The events ended with a very good party at the Royal Cape Yacht club on Saturday evening. It was wonderful to see so many Rotary friends in person again at events full of fun, laughter and inspiration after 3 years of meeting via Zoom. The next District Assembly and Conference will be in Mossel Bay on 19 and 20 April 2024. We hope to see you there, in the meantime let’s continue to “Imagine Rotary and Create hope in the world”.

Help Young Children to Grow Their Minds -
Please help the Rotary club of Swellendam (NPO 272-334) to build an Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Rondomskrik - where no facilities for young children exist.

Due to lack of cognitive development in early childhood 65% of our children in the Republic of South Africa are not ready to start school at 6 years old.

The ECD Centre will be in the middle of the community and also have a school food garden, a creche for 2 - 4 year olds, a pre-school for 5 - 6 year olds and an after school class for 6 - 13 year olds are planned.

The planned building will have a central communal area, 3 classrooms, a kitchen, toilets for the children, staff room and office. There will be a fully equipped playground outside.

You can help make this a reality by making a donation to the Rotary Club of Swellendam, all monies received will be used on the project.

- After an incredibly successful Swellendam Show the Rotarians enjoyed a relaxing evening thanking all the wonderful people that assisted with the stall at the yearly show. We also invited friends and colleagues who showed interest in becoming members of our amazing club!
Rotary is not only about projects but also about having fun! Many thanks to Anacreon and Caroline for hosting an amazing evening!

On Thursday 30 March 2023, Swellendam Rotary club were visited by some special people who had been waiting patiently on the list for wheelchairs. It is hard to imagine the difference that a wheelchair can make to the lives of people who need them. They are no longer stuck in one place in the house waiting for a relative or carer to come and help them and they can get outside into the garden and enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant weather. Thanks to the assistance from Blauberg, Melkbos and Helderberg Rotary clubs, we have managed to provide 14 wheelchairs this year. Now we must raise some more funds so we can continue to bring change to the lives of the most vulnerable in our community. St Luke's Gemenskap Voedsel Tuin - Sedert 2021 is daar gewerk om die Infrastruktuur by St.Luke's te verbeter. Water tenke en dripstelsel is geinstaleer wat die groente oeste met 60% verbeter het.Dit het harde werk gekos, maar die moeite werd.

50% van die groente word verkoop en 50% van dit word aan huis houdings geskenk. Meer as 80 huis houdings is bereik en glo meer gesinne sal baat vind.

Ons is gedurende besig om die projek uit te brei, sodat meer groente aan geplant kan word.

Sonder die hulp van Swellendam Rotary Klub, CAP Swellendam, Departement Sosiale Ontwikkeling en Dept van Landbou sal ons nie sover gekom het nie. Graag bedank ons al die rolspelers vir u aanhoudende bystand. Dit word opreg waardeer.

An intrepid team from Swellendam Rotary Club crawled out of bed at 0230 on the morning of Sunday 12 March and headed for the M3 in Cape Town. They arrived at 0515 at Feeding Station 1 to pick up their flags and equipment and head out to their marshal positions between the Alphen junction and Ladies Mile Road. The first group of riders came speeding past at 0615, so close to the edge of the carriageway that some startled spectators from Rawson Property had to take a step back. Tens of thousands of riders flowed past over the next 6 hours while the skilled team of marshals from Swellendam kept everybody safe from harm. The road opened soon after midday and the team headed home via a lovely lunch at the Houwhoek Padstal. Huge thanks to Hilda, Dave, Marius, Jackie, Stephen - and Trevor from Worcester Rotary club. Let’s do it again next year.

- SLOPPY SAM'S FAMOUS SAUCE makes a delightful mess of it!
Once again The Rotary Club of Swellendam pulled out all the stops to host a
food stall at this year's Agri-Show. With the help of volunteers, club
members and sponsors they sold over 300 Sloppy Sam's Steak and Chicken
rolls, as well as 190 kg Slap Chips! (Not to mention the RIBS that were
trialed!) So much fun and camaraderie was generated, but more importantly
all profits go back into community projects, supporting those that are less
fortunate. Rotary would like to thank the businesses who made this valuable
project possible - OYFKRANS BAKERY, TONY'S BUTCHERY, CREATIVE COVERINGS,
SOILL, CHECKERS & SPAR. And a big shout out to all our customers who helped
to make this event such a huge success! Watch out for Next Year's RIB EVENT

The rotary club of Swellendam is very grateful to this amazing group of young people who have just finished their level 5 Business management course run by Swellendam municipality. This group are conducting a community survey on behalf of Swellendam Rotary club to confirm community support for the construction of a creche and preschool complex in Rondomskrik, Railton. This area is home to hundreds of families and has no facilities at all for small children of pre-school age. With so many households to visit, this is a big task. Thank you Swellendam municipality for making this group available and thanks to them for all their hard work. Without them this project cannot become a reality.

These photos are from the additional eye screening done as part of the Rotary Swellendam Family health outreach. There were 40 people that were left at the end of the screening done in October 2022. In the end we completed another 80 people from the local community . The Screening was performed by Lelanie van Tonder from SpecSavors in Swellendam. The eyes were assessed, then the people were either given reading glasses,referred for a full eye test or sent to the clinic for cataract issues. This is an annual event and should happen again in October 2023.
