🏁 What an Incredible Weekend in Swellendam! 🚴‍♂️

This past weekend, Swellendam came alive as over 3,500 cyclists from across the country and indeed the world, took on the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century—one of South Africa’s most iconic endurance races. The Rotary Club of Swellendam is proud to have been part of the race's incredible success, contributing 150+ staff and volunteers who collectively put in more than 1,000 hours to ensure everything ran smoothly. From the Coca Cola stand at the finish line, to medals, the bike park, the refreshments tent, local traffic marshalling, event coordination with the various vendors, and even more, Rotary Club of Swellendam stood up to the challenge and made the #omwdc2024 a smashing success!

The impact of this event reaches far beyond the finish line. Swellendam’s tourism and hospitality industries buzzed with activity as riders, their teams, and supporters filled local guesthouses to capacity, restaurants, and shops overflowing. Events like these not only showcase our beautiful town but also provide a vital boost to our local economy.

We’d like to thank all the participants, our amazing volunteers, and the community for their hard work and support. Your efforts help make Swellendam a destination of choice for major sporting events, and tourism alike.

Here’s to another memorable Double Century and to the continued growth of our town through sport and collaboration! In the spirit of the Double Century, "Going Further, Together" 💙

✅ 200 km Challenge: A gruelling but rewarding endurance ride through the scenic Western Cape.
✅ Team Event: Teams of up to 12 riders strategise together, with the first 6 riders’ times counting once they cross the finish line.
✅ Scenic Beauty: Cyclists enjoy breathtaking views of Swellendam, multiple mountain passes, and rolling hills.
✅ Elevation and Weather: Riders face challenging climbs and unpredictable conditions, making it a true test of strength.
✅ Community Spirit: It’s a gathering of cyclists and supporters from across South Africa and beyond!

Since 2008, the Rotary Club of Swellendam has proudly partnered with this iconic event, playing a vital role in its success. 🚴‍♀️✨

Here’s how we contribute to the 2024 Old Mutual Wealth Double Century while supporting our community:

🎉 Happy 59th Birthday to the Rotary Club of Swellendam! 🎉

Today we celebrate 59 incredible years since our club was first chartered on November 6, 1965. Over the decades, we have worked together to make a meaningful impact in Swellendam, driven by fellowship, service, and our commitment to improving lives in our community and beyond.

We also had the privilege of honoring a truly remarkable member of our club, Danie Theron. As one of our longest-serving Rotarians, Danie joined us shortly after the club's founding and has since attended over 1,500 club meetings! 🎖️ His dedication, friendship, and steadfast commitment have inspired us all. Today, we proudly recognize Danie as an Honorary Member, a well-deserved tribute for his years of service and unwavering support.

Finally, we invite everyone to support Rotary's global mission to End Polio Now. This campaign is close to our hearts, and every contribution makes a difference. Together, we can end polio forever, bringing us one step closer to a polio-free world. 💪🌍

🇨🇦 O Canada!

🌍🤝 Rotary Friends Exchange – Building Friendships Across Borders! 🇿🇦 🇨🇦

What a fantastic day welcoming our Rotary friends from Canada as part of the Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE)! 🌞 They joined us in Swellendam as they left from Hout Bay earlier in the morning. We had the pleasure of showing them around, sharing a delicious lunch at Tredici, and visiting our ongoing project at the Rondomskrik ECD school.

The RFE program brings Rotarians from around the world together, fostering international understanding and building lasting friendships. Today was a perfect example of how Rotary connects people, whether across the street or across continents.

At Rondomskrik, we shared the heart of our work: investing in early childhood development and supporting local communities. Our Canadian friends were moved by the energy and hope that this project brings to the children of Swellendam. ❤️

Afterward, we enjoyed wonderful fellowship at Tredici, where laughter and stories were shared, proving once again that Rotary is more than just service – it’s about friendship, community, and making memories that span the globe. 🌐🍽️

Thank you to all who helped make this day memorable, and to our Canadian friends for bringing the spirit of fellowship with them. Here’s to many more exchanges and shared projects that bridge the distance and bring us all a little closer together!

The Rotary Club of Swellendam had the privilege of having a lunch at La Belle Alliance with John and Lorraine Winship, who have been instrumental in the funding of the ECD school project in Railton.

With a tour of the facilities that are nearing completion in their construction, and conversation surrounding the plan for the future and how to ensure sustainability of the school once open, the meeting was a success and we all have great hopes for the many lives this will impact. Not only will the children that attend have a better start to their lives, the parents of the children with childcare, the teachers with jobs, and the community at large will all see a marked improvement.

The Rotary Club of Swellendam is always on the look out for other community projects that improve friendships and build better goodwill.

It is with a great honour and pleasure for us today to congratulate our very own Stephen Young, and ask that you join in celebrating with us his birthday today, July 26th.

Stephen joined the Swellendam Rotary Club in 2011 as an Engelsman in an Afrikaans club. He learned Afrikaans and was elected president in 2014, he was Club Secretary from 2015 to 2018 when he was appointed as an Assistant Governor from 2019 through 2021. He was chair of the District Rotary Friendship Exchange Committee from 2019 to 2022 also sitting on the district Food Gardens committee. In 2022, he was selected as District Governor for 2024/25 and joined the District Finance Committee. Stephen has a background of service in the British army for 30 years followed by 10 years in the defence industry and 12 years in the hospitality sector.

He likes rugby, wine, F1, skiing, cooking and meeting people. He also likes reading and history. He is passionate about Rotary and creating lasting change in our community through partnerships. He is the first District Governor in 58 years from Swellendam Rotary club, but he hopes and believes that more Swellendammers will follow. His Birthday gift is to donate R10 for every year of his life to End Polio Now to finally eradicate this cruel and devastating disease which mainly affects children from 0 to 5 years old and leaves them disabled for the rest of their lives. He challenges you to match this. Are you up for it?
